Bafilomycin C1

Bafilomycin C1 is a macrolide antibiotic inhibitor of membrane V-ATPase (vacuolar-type H⁺-ATPase) enzymes. The V-ATPase proteins are ATP-dependent proton pump structures which are highly conserved across many different types of organisms, including eukaryotes, bacteria, fungi, nemotodes, and plants. Bafilomycin C1, as well as Bafilomycin A and the other compounds of the family, demonstrates antibacterial and antinematodal properties. V-ATPases on the osteoclast bone-apposed plasma membrane are crucial for the process of bone resorption, and excessive resorption is correlated to syndromes of deficient bone material such as osteoporosis; V-ATPase inhibitors such as Bafilomycin C1 represent potential interventional agents upon this bone resorption.
