PGD2 (Prostaglandin D2) is a major cellular regulator synthesized from arachidonic acid via the catalytic activities of cyclooxygenases (COX) and PGD2 synthases (PGDS) in mast cells, macrophages and other cellular sources. PGD2 has been shown to bind DP and CRTH2 receptors, and reportedly inhibits platelet aggregation, proliferation of cells, and activation of neutrophils. This compound is also a potent vasodilator that also relaxes smooth muscle, but causes contraction of the bronchial airways. Furthermore, PGD2 is thought to be involved with sleep regulation it has been shown to lower the body temperature and induce normal sleep. PGD2 (Prostaglandin D2) is an activator of DP2 and DP.
