C2 Ceramide

C2 Ceramide is a ceramide shown to be a potent modulator of proliferation and differentiation, used as a tool for studying the complex signaling associated with the ceramides. N-Acetyl-D-sphingosine and other ceramides are shown to activate a cystolic serine/threonine protein phosphatase. The main ceramide-activated protein phosphatase was isolated and identified as trimeric and dimeric PP2A. The sphingomyelin pathway, which generates ceramides as second messengers, is thought to mediate apoptosis in response to TNF-α through the stress-activated protein kinase (SAPK/JNK) signaling system.
