Supercinnamaldehyde is a derivative of cinnamaldehyde (the organic compound that give cinnamon its flavor and odor) and a transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) activator. TRPA1 ion channels are expressed in the dorsal root ganglion, trigeminal ganglion and hair cells and are believed to function as mechanical stress sensors. Supercinnamaldehyde interacts with TRPA1 by covalently bonding with the protein's cystine residues, which can result in rapidly signaling potential tissue damage through the pain pathway.
