Description

Potassium dichromate is a strong oxidizing agent used to determine ethanol concentrations in solution via oxidation methods. In addition, this oxidizing agent is used to determine the presence and purity of silver. Studies suggest that the chromium moiety of Potassium dichromate exists as a hexavalent ion which is consumed by red blood cells and platelets and displays non-specific binding to nucleoproteins. Furthermore, the trivalent form of this molecule causes free radical damage to mitochondria in kidney tubules and hepatocytes. Potassium dichromate also functions as a mutagen against DNA repair-deficient strains of Escherichia coli.
