Piperazine

Buffer component; the pH of a 10% aqueous solution is 10.8-11.8. Used as a buffer component in chromatography purifications and/or separations based on pH. The piperazine scaffold is frequently found in biologically active compounds across a number of different therapeutic areas. Some therapeutic areas include antifungals, antidepressants, antiviral, and serotonin receptor (5-HT) antagonists/agonists. Has been used since the 1950's as an anthelmintic, especially in horses and dogs. The anthelmintic properties of piperazine compounds is by paralysis of the parasites; this action is mediated by its agonistic effects on the GABA receptor. Wide variety of additional applications include use as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, polymers, dyes, corrosion inhibitors, rubber accelerators and surfactants.
