2-(Phosphonomethyl)-pentanedioic acid is a potent inhibitor of the neuropeptidase N-acetylated α-linked acidic dipeptidase (NAALADase), which is a membrane-bound peptidase that hydrolyses N-acetyl-L-aspartate-L-glutamate (NAAG), a major brain peptide.
