Description

Phleomycin is an antibiotic closely related to Bleomycin. Phleomycin and Bleomycin are both described to form Cu(II)-complexes which approximate DNA and induce oxidative DNA degradation. Intercalation is not observed with the Cu(II)-Phleomycin complex, indicating that the intercalation demonstrated by Bleomycin complexes is not requisite for DNA degradation. The oxidative DNA degradation induced by Phleomycin-metal complexes is suggested to be mediated by intermediate oxidation of free thiols to their radical forms.
