Description

(+)-Isobutyl D-lactate is an ester of lactic acid. Esters of enantiomerically pure lactic acid are used as starting material for the synthesis of many interesting chiral building blocks, e.g. (R)-1,2-propanediol by reduction with LiAlH₄; (R)-2-alkoxypropanol by O-protection and reduction, (R)-propylene oxide, (R)-2-acetoxypropionyl chloride, (R)-2-O-tosyl-1,2-propanediol.
