Ganglioside GT1b trisodium salt

Ganglioside GT1b trisodium salt (bovine brain) is an alkaline preparation of ganglioside GT1b, a glycosphingolipid-containing small molecule with potent neuroprotective function. Ganglioside GT1b is described to block glutamate-receptor-mediated activation and translocation of protein kinase C, interrupting the increase of neuronal Ca²⁺ influx correlated with this translocation, and inhibiting the subsequent neurotoxicity presented by this Ca²⁺ influx. Ganglioside GT1b is demonstrated to protect mouse brain cells against L-cysteine-induced damage of mitochondrial DNA and increased lipid peroxidation, suggested to operate through scavenging of OH radicals promoted by L-cysteine. Ganglioside GT1b is also demonstrated to suppress seizures, damage to mitochondrial DNA and lipid peroxidation induced by kainic acid.
